CHAPTER ELEVEN

Nick woke up slowly. One of the reasons he hated general anesthesia so much was that it clearly hated him back. He had no food in his stomach to throw up, but that didn’t keep his body from trying a few times. He was disoriented, confused, dizzy and miserable. The overhead lights were too bright, the sounds of the hospital were strange and frightening, and he was all alone.

“Steady, Nick.” Warm pressure on his shoulder, and Nick looked over to see a familiar face, but not the one he’d half expected. “You’re okay,” Blake said calmly.

“Wha?” The word wasn’t exactly clear in Nick’s head, but it was definitely more coherent than the sound he managed to produce.

“Only family in the recovery room,” Blake explained. “So Alex gave me a call.”

“Wahm…” On that one, Nick wasn’t even sure what he’d been trying to say.

“You’re okay. The procedure was successful. They’re processing the donation now, and they’ll do the transfusion in a couple of hours.”

A long wait as Nick gathered his energy and focus, and then, “Dzzzt?”

Blake raised an eyebrow. “I don’t know what you’re saying, Nick. It probably isn’t important. Go back to sleep, and when you wake up you’ll be more coherent.”

But maybe it was important. Maybe this wasn’t the natural aftereffects of the anesthetic; maybe this was the beginning of an adverse reaction, Nick’s body shutting down. Or maybe there’d been some sort of brain damage and this was as clear as Nick was ever going to get. “Whungz,” he insisted. “Dabbbst…”

“Go to sleep,” his father replied. Nick didn’t think that was a good idea at all, but his body apparently disagreed, and he drifted off.

His next awareness was of being held down, strange hands on his chest and his legs, a loud, unfamiliar voice saying, “Calm down, Mr. Colton. You’re fine. Relax, Mr. Colton. Please.”

But where was he, and who the hell was talking to him, and how was he supposed to relax when they were pushing him, driving him back into the darkness, keeping him where he didn’t want to be?

“Chill out, Nick.” Nick’s eyes opened and scanned the room desperately. There was the familiar face, a worried frown above an open mouth, and Nick heard it again. “You’re okay. It’s okay. They’re trying to help.”

“Alex,” Nick managed, and as his body relaxed the hands eased away from him, leaving room for Alex to edge a little closer.

“Your dad had to go. Anna’s having the transfusion. They thought you’d be asleep for longer.”

“Alex,” Nick said again.

“You are so fucked up, Nick.” Alex turned to the nearest nurse and said, “He’s not good with anesthesia, but this seems extra messy. Is he okay?”

“His vital signs are good. He’s just having a hard time in his head. Sometimes it happens. As long as he stops flailing around, he should be fine. It’ll go away shortly.”

“You hear that, Nick?” Alex leaned over Nick’s head and peered at him in concern. “Just sit tight, and you’ll be okay.”

“Just family,” Nick mumbled.
